There is a band called Abe Vigoda?

fuck you douches that named your band abe vigoda. be original. they are a “tropical punk band” what does that mean? does anyone even know if they are good?

I’m not sure if I like them as much as The Mae Shi, but they’re definitely really good and about as throughly original as anyone making guitar based music these days.

Tropical punk = winding guitar interplay, using tones that evoke steel drums, over rhythms on the vaguely tribal side of no wave.

other good uses of famous/semi-famous actors names by punk bands:

Yaphet Kotto - late 90s/00s screamo band on Council Records and Ebullition. I didn’t know that he was a well known black actor until I was reading the book of Michael Moore’s TV Nation where he used him to try and hail a cab in Manhattan, but he is. I thought the name was just something Jewish (and he is) - the initials are, er, the same as Yom Kippur - and it does have pretty cool sound to it.

Dananananakroyd - UK indie/post-punk band of the sort of loose UK/Ireland Fight Like Apes-Dananananakroyd-Johnny Foreigner axis that raptoravatar likes. I still the name sounds a little silly and too new-wavey, but they’re a pretty loud band on record, and they even have a chant based on their name. Well, a chant that is their name, but with emphasis.

Adebisi Shank - Irish noise/punk/rock band whose debut album, This Is the Album of A Band Called Adebisi Shank was produced by J. Robbins, and whose name comes from the character Simon Adebisi on the prison show Oz (the actor’s name is Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, which would have been a really adventurous choice). I remember when I was still in secondary school, Oz was extremely popular among a lot of people, as a graveyard-slot HBO import (along with the Wire and the superb Carnivale).

WHYY am i not listening to Dananananakroyd? that might be the best band name i’ve ever heard.
